As you may remember, when I first heard that Athlete was coming to Bakersfield as the opener for Switchfoot I was a bit excited. The show was last night and of course camera was in hand and the Fox Theatre was pretty well packed with an audience that was very receptive to both bands. The photos that actually came out can be found on Flickr.
Athlete put on a great set and I got to see the theremin in action. Of course, I didn't know it was a theremin at first and had to ask Jamie this morning what the antenna thing was that makes these electronic sounds without being touched. The highlight had to be hearing "Wires" live. Before launching into the song, Joel Pott explained that the song was inspired by his daughter who had seizures a few hours after being born (she's okay now).
I initially wasn't that excited to see Switchfoot, having heard some of their songs around, which were good but nothing really pulled me in. Have to admit that I enjoyed their set more than I expected to. Slightly distracting was throughout the show I wondered who would be coming on stage to play the kid sized drum kit but the drummer himself did.
